The Hawaii Island Palm Society is hosting a garden tour and ice cream social at 1 p.m. Aug. 16.

This will be the society’s first tour of a private garden with more than 200 different palm species. Anyone curious to see what can be planted on a steep old lava flow parcel will benefit from this tour. Attendees also will see what palm growth’s achieved in just more than seven years in East Hawaii.

Many of the palms in the garden are native to South America and Madagascar, but there also are palms native to Hawaii and Asia.

An ice cream social follows the tour. The nonmember fee to tour the garden is $5 per person.

If interested, RSVP to Bob at 333-5626 by Aug. 12. Join HIPS at the event for $10 and receive a free palm.
