Big Island Federal Credit Union awarded $10,000 in scholarships to seven students desiring to continue their education.
The Scholarship Committee reviews and scores all applicants based on academic excellence, personal achievements, community involvement, academic and career goals, and letters of recommendation.
The 2015 $2,500 scholarship recipients are Lisa Ishimoto (Waiakea High School) and Kristina Henricks (University of Florida).
The recipients of the credit union’s $1,000 scholarships are Hanale Lee Loy (Kamehameha Schools-Hawaii), Angelica Salom (Keaau High School), Jordan Kamimura (Hilo High School), Mia Nako (Hilo High) and James Balagot (Hilo High).
In 1936, a group of teachers formed the Big Island Teacher’s Federal Credit Union.
It was the first chartered credit union in the territory of Hawaii. Years later, as a community credit union with an islandwide charter, Big Island Federal Credit Union remains committed to supporting the students and teachers of the Big Island.
