Pilipaa coach Chris Leonard continued to see signs of improvement. Along the way, he also saw a victory.

The Hilo 14-and-under girls team broke through at the USA Volleyball junior national championships on Wednesday, winning in three sets on the second day of pool play.

The 25-15, 21-25, 15-9 victory came against a team from Washington that was coached by former University of Hawaii standout Outside Hitter Chris Kosty.

“The ball-control was much more consistent than it had been earlier in the the tournament, ” Leonard said.

Earlier in the day, Pilipaa 14s lost in straight sets despite a strong effort against a team from Ohio.

“We played well, but everything we hit, they dug,” Leonard said.

He was happy with the play of his outside hitter and middles.

“Keani Akui played well, and we had good balance,” he said.

At 1-4 in tournament, Pilipaa will continue in flight play.
