Nelson Kiyoshi Doi, former lieutenant governor, 3rd Circuit Court judge, and state senator, died Saturday at his Waimea home. He was 93.

Born in Pahoa on New Year’s Day, 1922, Doi went to Honokaa High School, University of Hawaii at Manoa, where he was student body president, and the University of Minnesota Law School.

Doi had a hand in Hawaii’s statehood, being elected to the Hawaii State Constitutional Convention in 1950, and was one of five delegates selected to lobby for statehood.

He served 14 years in the territorial and state senates, was a 3rd Circuit Judge for five years, then spent one term as lieutenant governor, 1974-1978.

In 1996, he lobbied the state legislature for funds to build North Hawaii Community Hospital in Waimea.

Doi is survived by son, Dr. David T. Doi (Aimee Love) of Waimea; daughter, Katherine A. Doi (Bruce Phillips) of Palo Alto, Calif.; sister-in-law, Tsuneko Doi; four grandchildren; and 18 nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers or koden (monetary gifts), donations are suggested to North Hawaii Hospice “in Memory of

Nelson Doi,” 65-1328 Kawaihae Road, Kamuela, HI 96743.

Services are pending.
