UHH’s Wilson gets PacWest pitching honor

University of Hawaii at Hilo’s Danielle Wilson was named the PacWest Pitcher of the Week.

The sophomore right-hander, from Chino Hills, Calif., earned both wins in UHH’s doubleheader sweep of Chaminade.

She threw a complete game in the opener, allowed one run on eight hits and struck out two. She threw 4 1/3 innings in a five-inning win in the second game, and allowed just one run.

Wilson is seventh in the PacWest with 13 wins. She is 13-7 with a 3.66 ERA in 118 2/3 innings. She has allowed 143 hits and 67 walks, and has whiffed 37.

As a hitter, Wilson is batting .281with two homers and nine RBIs in 64 at-bats.

Igawa tied for eighth at PacWest championship

UHH’s Andi Igawa is tied for eighth place at the Pacific West Conference Women’s Golf Championship after the first roound Monday at the Sunbrook Golf Course in St. George, Utah.

The freshman turned in a 5-over-par 77 to lead the Vulcans to seventh place after the first day of competition with a 346 total.

Shannon Abarra is in 24th place with an 85 and is joined by Erin Costes (T32, 91) and Mariah Paiste (T35, 93).

California Baptist leads the team competition with a 299 while three golfers are tied for first place at 1-over-par 73.

James Coon is tied for second place to lead UHH to sixth place after the first day of the PacWest Championship on the Sunbrook Golf Course.

The freshman turned in a 3-under-par 69 on the 6888-yard, par-72 course to trail Dominican’s Drew Nelson by two strokes.

Dalen Yamauchi is tied for 20th place at 4-over-par 76 while Conner Graves and Kyeton Littel are tied for 33rd place at 8-over-par 80. David Tottori is tied for 37th place at 9-over-par 81.

The Vulcans turned in a 305 on the day to trail tournament leader Dixie State by 19 strokes.

Keaau coaching positions for hoops, cheerleading

Keaau High School is accepting applications for boys basketball coach and cheerleading coach. All interested applicants may pick up an application at our main office between 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, excluding holidays.

Applicant must meet minimum standards and expectations, as well as passing a background check to be considered for the position. Applicant must also be willing to obtain mandatory certifications as necessary.

Applications will be accepted starting April 20th and must be received at the office no later than May 22 at 4 p.m.

Aikane Tennis on April 28 at Kanakaole stadium

HIGA golf tourney April 26 at Hilo Muni

Hawaii Island Golf Association (HIGA)/Hilo Muni Golf Club will hold a six-person team tournament Sunday, April 26, at Hilo Municipal Golf course.

All eligible players must be HIGA members and must have their HIGA handicap index posted by April 1. The first 24 teams entered by today’s deadline will be eligible to play in the tournament.

The entry fee is $120 per six-person team ($20 per team member). The fee covers the cost of a bento lunch at Kim’s restaurant at the Muni and part of cash prizes for winning teams and individual players. Green fees and golf cart charges are not included in the entry fee.
