Edward “Buddy” “Bob” Edison Fergerstrom, 82, of Hilo died April 11 at Hospice of Hilo’s Pohai Malama Facility. Born in Pepeekeo, he was a retired construction supervisor for Hawaiian Tel, U.S. Navy veteran, avid koa woodworker and member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Visitation 8:30-10 a.m. Monday, April 27, at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Mass 10:30 a.m. Inurnment to follow at Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No. 2 columbarium. Casual attire. Survived by wife, Patricia Fergerstrom of Hilo; daughters, Patti-Jo (Wallace Tamashiro) Fergerstrom-Tamashiro and Cindy (Fred Palea) Fergerstrom-Palea of Hilo; son, Patward (Debbie) Fergerstrom of Hilo; sister, Eleanor (Norman) Wong Chong of Hilo; sisters-in-law, Lillian Schattauer and Norma Fergerstrom of Hilo, Josephine Fergerstrom and Marjorie Fergerstrom of Kona; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, hanai grandchildren and hanai great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins. Samuel Haruto Baranaba Kanekoa, 43, died April 10 at Thomas Memorial Hospital in South Charleston, W.Va. He was an artisan of Hawaiian crafts, longtime performer and hula instructor and founded Chief Kamu’s Fire and Hula Show. Visitation 10 a.m.-noon Saturday, May 2, at Kukuihaele Park. Service at noon. Celebration of life to follow. Casual attire. Survived by daughters, Mahealani and Nanea Kanekoa of South Carolina; mother, Cynthia Kanekoa of Kukuihaele; brothers, Jayson (Wardene) Kanekoa of Waimea and Emrique (Nadine) Kanekoa of Honokaa; sister, Ronell Kanekoa of Waimea; nieces and nephews.

Matsuyo “Thelma” Kawate, 93, of Hilo died April 6 at home. Born in Hilo, she was the former proprietress of Kawate Seed Shop and member of Hilo Hooganji Mission, Lower Kawailani Kumiai, Kamana Karaoke Club, Yamaguchi Kenjin Kai, Hawaii and Hui Okinawa Club. Services held. No flowers or koden (monetary gifts). Survived by son, Randy (Karen) Kawate of Hilo; daughters, Karen Moyer of Washington state, Laraine Yonemura of Honolulu, Maureen (Dean) Izuno of Texas and Pearl (John) Kawate-Sasaki of Hilo; brother-in-law, Yoshimi (Itsuko) Kawate of Honolulu; sister-in-law, Sadako Kawate of Kaneohe, Oahu; eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; nephews, nieces and cousins. Herman “Bully” Puou Kunewa, 60, of Kona died July 27. Born in Kealakekua, he was a substitute teacher for Konawaena middle and high schools, diploma and GED educator for Hawaii State Work Force Development, educator for Waipahu Community School for Adults DOE Kona campus, Speedi Shuttle driver, coffee farmer, musician and former National Park Service ranger.
