The Boys &Girls Club Big Island will hold its third annual Youth of the Year Banquet on Friday at 5:30 p.m. at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel.

The Boys &Girls Club Big Island will hold its third annual Youth of the Year Banquet on Friday at 5:30 p.m. at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel.

The Youth of the Year program is the Boys &Girls Club of America’s premier youth recognition program, which promotes and celebrates service to club, community and family, academic performance, moral character, life goals, and poise and public speaking ability.

Along with the Big Island Youth of the Year award, the Big Island club will honor two community partners who have been instrumental in the local chapter’s success.

Warren Lee, Hawaii County Department of Public Works director and a Boys &Girls Club Big Island emeritus board member, will receive the Honoree of the Year award.

Since 2003, Lee has led many successful initiatives for the organization, including a popular golf tournament that will be in its ninth year, the renovations of the Hilo clubhouse, and keeping the local clubs thriving during challenging times.

The Champions of Youth Award will be presented to the Big Island Table Tennis Association.

The table tennis association has provided table tennis opportunities for Big Island youth for many years through world class coaching and tournament sponsorship. Its partnership with the Boys &Girls Club began in 2010 and in that time, the association has not only provided great opportunities for youth but also helped the club with facility improvement and maintenance, security, fundraising and other needs.
