USDA’s Risk Management Agency (RMA) is notifying Hawaii producers and crop insurance agents about a change to the macadamia nut crop insurance program that will affect Hawaii County.

Beginning with crop year 2016, a new map will be implemented that unrates nonirrigated macadamia nuts in parts of Hawaii County. Producers who grow macadamia nuts under a nonirrigated farming practice in the affected area might be allowed to insure their crop through a written agreement option. The final date to apply for crop insurance for the 2016 crop year is Dec. 31.

Producers should contact a local crop insurance agent for premium quotes and other details. Crop insurance is sold and delivered solely through private crop insurance agents. A list of crop insurance agents is available at all USDA Service Centers and online at www.rma.usda.gov/tools/agents/.

Producers can use the RMA Cost Estimator to get a premium amount estimate of their insurance needs online at ewebapp.rma.usda.gov/apps/costestimator/.
