The Hawaii Museum of Contemporary Art announces the availability of “Aloha Aina Volume II: MORE Big Island Memories” book.

The Hawaii Museum of Contemporary Art announces the availability of “Aloha Aina Volume II: MORE Big Island Memories” book.

This volume of Aloha Aina is dedicated to Kay Yokoyama, “a consummate watercolorist, a kind and loving individual, a staunch supporter… who in every way personified the sterling qualities of our local kupuna. She was the driving force in recording the talk-stories of the families who cultivated this land, fished, raised their children and transmitted their culture, values and histories that we might all benefit in the creation of what Hawaii Island is today: a vibrant, soulful, diverse community.

“We are indebted to Kay’s untiring determination to create a lasting tribute to all those who have lived and died on this island and to leave to their descendants a voice from the past leading well past the present into the future,” said the publication committee.

“We also wish to thank the many people … who made such an effort to record these voices and put their stories down. … Those who collected these stories and transmitted them, readers and editors and the many artist whose work illustrates this volume.”

The dedication also pays tribute to Frances Sherrard and Gloria Kobayashi for their dedication in making this book possible.

Pre-sale orders are now being taken, with a discount of 15 percent for copies ordered by Sunday. The book is available in black and white for $29.95 and, in color, for $38.75, at the discounted price. For further information, visit ehcc.org, email admin@ehcc.org or call 961-5711.
