A 64-year-old Kailua-Kona man has died as a result of a moped crash Oct. 9 on Hinalani Street near Anini Street.

He was identified as Michael W. Fox.

Officers responding to a 6:30 p.m. call determined that Fox was riding on the right side of the lane heading east on Hinalani Street and passing a vehicle that was making a left turn onto Anini Street when the moped reportedly hit a rut in the road. Fox was thrown from the moped, which eventually ended up on top him.

Fox was taken to Kona Community Hospital and later flown to The Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu, where he was pronounced dead on Oct. 10 at 8:12 p.m.

Police do not believe speed or alcohol were factors.

Fox’s death is the 10th official traffic fatality of the year compared with 23 fatalities at this time last year.
