During the week of Sept. 8-14, police arrested 22 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Six of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.

During the week of Sept. 8-14, police arrested 22 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Six of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 11; South Hilo, 8; Puna, 2; and South Kohala, 1.

So far this year, there have been 831 DUI arrests compared to 896 during the same period last year, a decrease of 7.3 percent.

There have been 1,097 major accidents so far this year compared to 970 during the same period last year, an increase of 13.1 percent.

So far this year, there have been nine official traffic fatalities compared to 21 during the same period last year, a decrease of 57.1 percent.

To date, six of those fatalities have been linked to impaired driving — three to drugs and another three to a combination of drugs and alcohol.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
