A 28-year-old Hilo man is accused of the strong-arm robbery of a Chinese visitor last week in Keaukaha.

On Monday, Hilo District Judge Barbara Takase ordered Zachary Minichin Smith to appear at 2 p.m. Wednesday for a preliminary hearing.

According to court documents filed by police, Smith and another man allegedly accosted a 35-year-old Beijing man at about 6:30 a.m. Sept. 3 on Apapane Road.

One of the men allegedly punched the victim in the head and forcibly removed his camera, prescription eyeglasses and a room key card.

The estimated value of the items is $5,400.

Smith was arrested Saturday on Kamehameha Avenue in Hilo and charged with second-degree robbery, a Class B felony punishable by up to 10 years imprisonment and also for a separate warrant for contempt of court.

Takase maintained Smith’s bail at $11,000.
