The Hilo Buddhist Friendship Society of Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin recently named 2014 graduates Karyl-Lin Yamakawa and Jennifer Taniguchi of Waiakea High School and Kelsy Nishimura of Hilo High School as recipients of $1,000 scholarships. An awards dinner was hosted June 1 at Sangha Hall.

Nishimura is the daughter of Eugene and Dora Nishimura. She will attend Portland State University.

A WHS valedictorian, Taniguchi is the daughter of Arthur and Barbara Taniguchi. She will attend Creighton University.

Yamakawa, also a WHS valedictorian, is the daughter of Dr. Keith and Arlene Cabalse-Yamakawa. She will attend Seattle University on a merit-based scholarship.
