Members of the Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin Buddhist Women Association support Life Care Center of Hilo by visiting its residents all year long and periodically making special donations of handmade items. Recently, this group donated 35 lap blankets and 30 wheelchair bags.

“The bright colors of these donated items help to add a personal touch to the nursing home. Homemade items always help to bring a home-like atmosphere to the facility,” said social services Director Chris Ridley. “When residents see these new items, they admire the handiwork and reminisce about how their parents and grandparents used to make beautiful homemade items that were treasured during their life.

“When a staffer utilizes a new, brightly colored blanket, the staff person feels special and can see a transformation of a quiet elder become more alert and connected,” Ridley added. “This wonderful group has dedicated their time and talents in selfless giving for many years, and we thank them for remembering our honored elderly.”
