During the week of June 9-15, Big Island police arrested 23 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Seven of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.

During the week of June 9-15, Big Island police arrested 23 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Seven of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.

The numbers of arrests by district were: South Hilo, 9; Kona, 5; South Kohala, 4; Puna, 3; North Hilo and North Kohala, 1 each.

So far this year, there have been 568 DUI arrests compared to 595 during the same period last year, a decrease of 4.5 percent.

There have been 710 major accidents so far this year compared to 640 during the same period last year, an increase of 11 percent.

So far this year, there have been seven official traffic fatalities compared to 18 during the same period last year, a decrease of 61.1 percent.

To date, five of those fatalities have been linked to impaired driving — three to drugs and two, a combination of drugs and alcohol.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
