Kona recording artist Keikilani Lindsey takes the ‘Imiloa Planetarium stage tonight at 7 p.m. to debut his solo album “Mele‘uhane” (Spirit of Song) as part of the ‘Imiloa After Dark series.
The CD features 11 original songs plus a haunting rendition of “‘Olu o Pu‘ulani,” written by his great aunt, the legendary Hawaiian composer Helen Lindsey Parker.
With a deep affection for the Hawaiian language, Lindsey lends a new spin to haku mele (Hawaiian-language songwriting) and joins a new generation of Hawaiian storytellers endeavoring to explore many untold tales of the heart. In this album, Lindsey celebrates his love of ‘hana and culture by continuing to holomua (move forward) in his interpretations of classic family compositions and traditional Hawaiian favorites.
Lindsey became interested in music while in the sixth-grade choir. From there, he learned to dance hula and play ukulele and bass guitar. After graduating from Konawaena High School in 1992, he worked as a professional entertainer with his father and performed in numerous Polynesian shows. He also traveled the world and performed aboard various cruise lines.
Lindsey is a product of five generations of Hawaiian musicians and composers and has also been influenced by the music of legends such as Elton John, Michael Jackson, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Frank Sinatra and Stevie Wonder. Today, Lindsey continues to work with family and performs regularly with his oldest son, Leokani.
