“Not a lot of people look forward to the offseason, but when I worked hard when no one was around it was for this,” Takaki said. “Going into my senior year, it was me, my dad, a few of my teammates training in the offseason and we put in that extra effort. It paid off and it got me to where I am right now.”
Whitworth, a private university in Spokane, Wash., with an enrollment of just under 3,000 students, competes in NCAA Division III in the Northwest Conference. The Pirates finished 4-6 last season.
The school offered Takaki a “hard to resist” financial package, which led him to choose Whitworth over Pacific Lutheran and Pacific University.
Takaki was an All-BIIF selection at cornerback and wide receiver his senior season, finishing his senior campaign with 58 receptions for 1,089 yards and 14 touchdowns on offense and four interceptions on defense. Takaki expects to play in the slot for the Pirates.
“When I visited, (they) talked to me about playing slotback for them. After watching film on me and following me through the season (they) really liked my vision on the field. It’s whatever I can do. Whether it’s special teams or on offense. Anywhere I can help out,” Takaki said.
College football — of any caliber — is a huge increase in competition, but Takaki is ready to embrace the challenge.
“I’m looking forward to the competition,” Takaki said. “I like to be pushed. That is what brings out the best in players. I know I will have to bust my butt and I’m excited for that.”
Takaki also played a key role on Konawaena’s BIIF championship basketball team this season.
“I just want to thank the Kona community for supporting the team. All those who travel to watch our games and follow how we do,” Takaki said. “And a big thanks to my family, who were always there, especially my mom and dad, who taught me to never take a play off.”
Takaki will join a few other Hawaii players on the roster, including defensive back Shai Pulawa-Pollard from Leilehua and wide receiver Dane Arakawa from Iolani.
Whitworth opens the season Sept. 6 against division opponent Lewis & Clark at home.
