The public is invited to the annual Waimea Elementary School May Day Celebration from 8:30-10:30 a.m. Friday, May 23, on the school field. This year’s theme is “I ka wa ma mua i ka wa ma hope,” or “The future is found in the past.”
The public is invited to the annual Waimea Elementary School May Day Celebration from 8:30-10:30 a.m. Friday, May 23, on the school field. This year’s theme is “I ka wa ma mua i ka wa ma hope,” or “The future is found in the past.”
“We truly believe that the future is found in the past, that the wisdom of our elders is the torch that enlightens and guides the path of the children,” said spokesman Colin Miura. “When we take the time to learn our history we come to realize just how intelligent our ancestors are.
“To bring that history and lessons from the past into our present, it will guide and enlighten our student’s future. No matter how remote our past is, it does not make our culture extinct, it gives us the foundation to continue with the wisdom, education, and experiences of our kupuna and of our ancestors.”
Students will use the concepts of ohana, kupuna and kuleana (responsiblity) to share their oli, hula and their mele.
