The Fall Prevention Program, coordinated by Life Care Center of Hilo Social Service staff, completed 16 six-week sessions, graduating more than 170 participants and showing a true commitment to avoiding falls.

Participants all improved in their balance score by a 0.1 to 3.9 difference, said coordinator Chris Ridley.

“Every 10th counts at this level when you realize that a fall can lead to a costly fracture,” Ridley said.

“The cost of a fracture is not just medical bills but includes emotional and social complications; a loss of independence that can linger.”

The participants attended six classes and completed an exercise routine daily in their home.

University of Hawaii College of Pharmacy, Ellie Trumble, (Physical Therapist), Frances Dela Cruz (Physical Therapist), Priscilla Escritor (Dietitian), Pat Suganuma (nurse) and Alzheimer’s Association provided free presentations about factors to reduce falls.

Clinical Laboratories provided free cholesterol checks. Life Care Center of Hilo Nursing, Social Service, Dietary and Rehabilitation staff gave their expert time and support to provide education to the participants.

“This program was very helpful, I definitely feel this program is worth the time spent,” said one program evaluation.

The Life Care Social Service staff is now registering community members interested in participating in the next six-week session.

A fee of $25 is requested.
