“Math is Everywhere: The First Step to Growing Young Scientists,” is this year’s theme for the seventh-annual Hawaii Island Early Childhood Conference.
“Math is Everywhere: The First Step to Growing Young Scientists,” is this year’s theme for the seventh-annual Hawaii Island Early Childhood Conference.
The conference is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, April 11-12, at the Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort &Spa, Waikoloa Beach Resort.
The event is open to anyone who works in or has an interest in the field of early childhood education, from infant-toddler providers to third-grade teachers.
Organized by Baby STEPS to Stronger Big Island Families, this year’s conference will feature keynote speaker Lisa S. Goldstein. Goldstein is the director of teacher education at Santa Clara University in Santa Clara, Calif.
On Friday evening, Goldstein will present on “Growing Mathematical Minds with the Common Core.”
The presentation is geared toward teachers of young children through third grade and will help demystify Common Core state standards, while connecting them to developmentally appropriate practice, and focusing on foundational math concepts.
The evening includes a light buffet. Cost for the Friday event is $55.
On Saturday, there will be 15 workshops based on the conference theme. While Common Core state standards communicate what to teach, they do not dictate how to teach them.
The presenters will share how math concepts can be taught through a variety of subject areas in developmentally appropriate ways.
Cost for the all-day Saturday session — which includes continental breakfast and lunch — is $80.
There is an early registration deadline of March 14. After that date, both sessions go up to $65 and $90, respectively.
