The Hilo-based space research organization plans to use the 400-watt laser to build objects out of Hawaii’s volcanic rock.
Similar rock can be found on the moon and other planets. PISCES thinks the technology can be used to build objects, such as robotic parts, heat shields and launchpad tiles, on the moon and Mars during lengthy space missions.
The laser is on long-term loan from Jenoptik, an optoelectronics company based in Germany.
