The Hawaii County Police Department has announced plans for island-wide DUI checkpoints throughout the holiday season.

The campaign started Friday and runs through Jan. 1.

Police will also conduct projects to curb underage drinking in public areas and parks, according to Sgt. Robert Pauole, head of the traffic services section.

The section will bring attention to the campaign through a sign-waving event from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Dec. 20 on Kamehameha Avenue in Hilo. Volunteers are encouraged to participate.
