John Dewey “Jack Mad Cow” Cushing Jr., 75, of Hilo died March 20 at Maui Memorial Hospital. Born in Stamford, Conn., he was a proprietor of restaurant equipment and restoration businesses in Hawaii and a marine refrigeration service and fabrication company in the Virgin Islands. He was a member of the Koa Puna Motorcycle Club. He served in the U.S. Air Force. Memorial service from 3-5 p.m. Wednesday at Alii Ice Co., 21 Banyan Drive. Hiroko Nonaka Ochiai, 82, of Buena Park, Calif., formerly of Hilo, died April 11. Born in Paauhau and raised in Pi’ihonua, she graduated from Hilo High School in 1949 and moved to California. She went to work for Beckman Laboratories in Fullerton, Calif. and retired from the Orange County District Attorney’s Office. Memorial service at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, April 27 at Orange County Buddhist Church. She is survived by husband, Clyde Ochiai; daughter, Natalie (Ross) Ito; granddaughter, Kallie Ochiai, and many relatives in Hawaii and the mainland. Arrangements made by Fukui Mortuary.
