Elder abuse will be event topic
The public is invited to a presentation and discussion, “Keeping Our Seniors Safe,” being hosted by the Hilo Association for Family and Community Education, Ho’ike Club. The talk will be held from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 15, at the Kamana Senior Center. Light refreshments will be provided by Ho`ike Club.
“Keeping Our Seniors Safe” will focus on elder abuse and financial exploitation, how to avoid it, how to report it and what options are available for victims.
The presenter/moderator will be Lexi McKay, a member of the Elder Abuse Prosecution and Prevention Unit of the Hawaii County Prosecutor’s Office.
“Hawaii County’s Prosecutor, Charlene Iboshi, has been instrumental in getting this unit started, getting it funded and keeping the unit’s energy positive and community-focused,” McKay said.
The goal of the Elder Abuse project is to enhance awareness, prevention and expedited prosecution of elder abuse and exploitation cases in Hawaii County through inter-agency collaboration.

More than 200 books donated
The Hawaii County Elderly Activities Division’s Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) and Read To Me International sponsored a Keiki Read to Me event on Jan. 16 at the Prince Kuhio Plaza.
The program was able to hand out 246 new books to children with their parents or grandparents.
More than 20 RSVP and Read to Me International volunteers read with the children or had the children read to them. Read to Me International set up a craft table where the children could make paper books by folding paper and the story of “The Itsy Bitsy Spider” would be inside. The children were also given a bookmark and stickers for participating at the craft table.

RSVP is a program sponsored by the Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation Elderly Activities Division via a grant from Senior Corps of the Corporation for National and Community Service.
