Two BIIF volleyball matches happened on Tuesday night in Kea‘au.
Waiakea HS’ varsity got in the win column, sweeping the hosting Cougars — and across Kea‘au village, Kamehameha Schools – Hawai‘i swept Hilo HS for its third straight 3-0 victory.
KSH vs. Hilo
The Warriors defeated the Vikings in straight sets of 25-20, 25-19 and 25-15.
Though Hilo kept close, even holding brief leads at certain points, KSH prevailed to obtain a 3-0 BIIF DI record.
The Warriors were led by the hitting of Maela Honma, who notched a double-double with 26 kills and 19 digs. Honma made plays all over the court, also making three blocks and two aces.
Kealohi Dudoit led KSH’s defense with 20 digs. Setter Hali‘imailelauli‘i Kuamo‘o had 31 assists — also recording eight digs, two kills and two blocks.
Carmen Otake notched two aces, tying with Honma to lead the Warriors.
Now 0-1, Hilo will chase a BIIF DI win Sept. 8 at Waiakea HS.
Both KSH and Hilo will take part on KSH’s Labor Day Volleyball Classic Tournament, which begins at 3 p.m. today.
The tourney will include KSH, Hilo, Waiakea and Konawaena as well as 10 mainland teams and nine O‘ahu teams — including defending DI I State Champion ‘Iolani School and Moanalua High School.
Admission to the tourney is free, and action will take place across KSH’s three gyms, ending Saturday.
KSH will tip off its tourney play at 4 p.m. today against University Lab. At 3 p.m., Hilo will take on Bend HS (Oregon). Also at 3 p.m., Waiakea will take on Moanalua — and at 4 p.m., Konawaena will play against West Salem HS (Oregon).

Waiakea vs. Keaau
Waiakea routed Kea‘au 25-2 in the first set before the Cougars put up a hard fight in the second, but fell again 25-19.
The Warriors closed out the match with another big win in the third set, 25-11.
“We had a good start,” Waiakea head coach Laura Thompson said. “In the first set, a lot of our serves went really well. We were able to run our middles a lot. Second set was a little shaky, Kea‘au switched their lineup and it kind of threw us off our game a little bit, but we were able to bounce back.”
Thompson said that her team’s victory was the result of a well-rounded effort from its starting lineup.
“They did good. Sadie Calma had a little bit of an ace run in the third set. Lexie Uchima served a lot in the first set, I think she went on a 22-point streak or something like that. Toryn (Ono) was hitting a lot of big shots. We were hoping to get more of our bench in, but Keaau was doing well, so we were pretty up-and-up for some parts of the match.”
The Warriors are looking forward to attending this weekend’s tournament, which they had a great time at last year.
“Our first game is against Moanalua, who we also played last year,” Thompson said. “It was a really competitive match, we had a lot of fun. We kind of made friends with them and they cheered us on when we played a mainland team that was in our pool, then we did vice-versa.”
