Police are warning the public of a scam in which a person is impersonating a state police officer over the phone.

In one case, a woman reported that a man called here and identified himself as a state police officer with the Financial Crimes Department. On the caller ID, a number associated with the Hawaii Police Department showed, and the caller asked for personal information.

The woman didn’t provide her personal information and reported the call to police.

The Hawaii Police Department reminds the public that police officers do not call, text or email people to ask for personal information.

Suspicious calls can be reported to the police nonemergency number at (808) 935-3311 or Crime Stoppers at (808) 961-8300.
