Road closures planned for Merrie Monarch parade

On Saturday, Kamehameha Avenue between Waianuenue Avenue and the State Fisheries Research Station driveway in both directions will be closed from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. for the 60th Annual Merrie Monarch Festival Royal Parade and staging area.

The parade route will start from Piopio Street, turn left on Pauahi Street, right on Kilauea Avenue, continuing onto Keawe Street, turn right on Waianuenue Avenue, and right on Kamehameha Avenue, ending at Bishop Street.

Traffic in both directions on Bayfront Highway will be detoured through the Hilo Bayfront Park.

Please be advised that Waianuenue Avenue and Pauahi Street will be closed at Bayfront Highway.

The parade route closure will begin at 10 a.m., and the parade starts at 10:30.

Police officers, traffic cones, barricades, and electronic message boards will be present, and motorists are asked to comply with the direction of the officers and devices.

Parking space closures will be in effect from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on both sides of Kilauea Avenue and Keawe Street between Ponahawai Street and Waianuenue Avenue, according to the Hawaii Police Department.

All marked parking spaces on both sides of Waianuenue Avenue between Keawe Street and Kamehameha Avenue will also be closed.

Marked parking spaces reserved for persons with disabilities will remain accessible.

Also on Saturday, Kalanikoa Street between Piʻilani and Kuawa streets will convert to a one-way traffic pattern (northerly-Hilo bound).

The regular traffic pattern will resume on Kalanikoa Street at 8 a.m. Sunday.
