Hawaii Island police are investigating a dead body that was found this morning on a shoreline just outside of Hilo Bay.

According to a police statement, a caller reported seeing a body on the shore just west of the Bayshore Towers shortly after 6 a.m.

South Hilo Patrol officers and the Hawaii Fire Department responded to the scene, where the body was located and brought to higher ground.

The victim appears to be a local male in his late 40s or early 50s, but he has not yet been identified. The victim was transported to the Hilo Medical Center and pronounced dead at 7:46 a.m.

According to the statement, there were no immediate indications of foul play, but an autopsy will take place later this week to determine the cause of death.
