James “Jim” Glenn Frye, 76, of Ocean View died March 2 at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Camden, Maine, he was a retired hairdresser, artist, U.S. Army Vietnam War veteran and member of St. Jude’s Episcopal Church in Ocean View. No services. Survived by partner, John “Keoni” Joaquin and Lanigirl; sister, Susan Montoya; nieces, nephews and cousins. Arrangements by Dodo Mortuary.

Walter Takeshi Hanato, 79, of Honalo died March 5 at Kona Community Hospital. Born in Kealakekua, he was a groundskeeper at King Kamehameha Hotel and bartender at Teshima’s Restaurant. Services at a later date. Survived by sons, Darcy Hanato and Kenneth Hanato of Honalo, Daniel Hanato of Kealakekua; brother, Melvin (Jane) Hanato of Kailua-Kona; sisters, Nancy (Herbert) Go of Honalo and Girle (Jackie) Puhi of Captain Cook; five grandchildren and a great-grandchild; nieces, nephews and cousins. Raymond Masami Ohara, 86, of Hilo died Feb. 14 at home. Born in Honolulu, he was owner of Big Island Paving Co., a mechanic at Norona., foreman for McCabe Paving Co., lead man for Jorgensen Steel, employed at Haitsuka Brothers, attended Hawaii Island Adult Care, was a member of Hawaii Island Contractors’ Association, Local Union 3, Hilo Trollers, Hilo Macadamia Nut Association, St. Joseph Catholic Church and U.S. Air Force, Marine Corps and Hawaii Air National Guard veteran. Private services held. Survived by wife, Caroline P. McCabe Ohara; children, Raenelle (Michael), Rena and Ronda (Harlan); sister, Doris Ching; sisters-in-law, Evelyn Ohara, Irma, Darnell, Delia, Hanako, Lynn and Diane; brothers-in-law, Stanley (Blanche) and Chris; three grandchildren; nieces, nephews and hanai family. John Paul Souza, 69, of Captain Cook died Feb. 10 at Kona Community Hospital. Born in Honolulu, he was an iron worker for Associated Steel Co. and member of Iron Workers Union Local 625, and loved the ocean and his family. Private services at a later date. Survived by wife, Penelope H. Souza of Captain Cook.; daughters, Katie K Souza of Captain Cook and Lilah L. Souza of Kenmore, Wash.; a grandson. Arrangements by Dodo Mortuary
