County reports 2 COVID deaths

Hawaii County reported two new deaths from COVID-19 this week, according to data from the state Department of Health.

Both deaths were of women, one between the ages of 60-69 and another over the age of 80 with an underlying condition, both of whom were hospitalized. It is unknown if the woman between the ages of 60-69 also had an underlying condition.

The two new deaths bring Hawaii County’s overall death toll to 234 people since the start of the pandemic.

Throughout the state, there were seven total deaths from COVID-19 this week, bringing the statewide death toll to 1,841 people since the pandemic began.

According to the latest variant report released March 1, the highly transmissible omicron subvariant XBB.1.5 now accounts for 47% of variants circulating throughout Hawaii County, making it the most dominant variant in both the county and the state.
