Police ID pedestrian killed in January traffic crash

Police have identified a pedestrian killed in a Jan. 14 traffic crash as 58-year-old John Venrick of Mountain View.

An autopsy was conducted, but police said Friday they are still awaiting the results, including the exact cause of Venrick’s death.

Venrick was hit by a Pahoa-bound blue Acura sedan near the 3-mile marker of Highway 130 at about 5 a.m. According to police, Venrick was wearing dark clothing and there was no lighting in the area.

The driver of the car, a 46-year-old Keaau woman, sustained minor injuries as her windshield shattered after striking Venrick The women’s three children were passengers but were uninjured.

The investigation into the crash remains open.
