Hawaii County’s Planning Department has announced another round of public outreach meetings relating to an update of zoning and subdivision codes.

The events are scheduled for from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 17, at the Aupuni Center Conference Room in Hilo or the Waimea Community Center, and from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 18, at the Pahala Community Center or the West Hawaii Civic Center.

The county is undertaking a review and update of its zoning and subdivision codes (Chapters 25 and 23 of the 1983 Hawaii County Code), with the last comprehensive reviews in 1996 and 1983, respectively.

The code updates intend to increase consistency and predictability, incorporate best practices in land use and zoning, promote desirable and equitable development, and meet the needs of the community.

The process is expected to last approximately 18 months and will include several rounds of community engagement with virtual and in-person public meetings, focus groups and online open houses.

The first round of community engagement was completed in October 2022 with two in-person open houses and an online virtual open house.
