Police arrest 26 for DUI

During the week of Oct. 31 to Nov. 6, Hawaii Island police arrested 26 motorists for DUI.

Seven of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. Two of the drivers were younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 11; South Hilo, seven; Puna, four; South Kohala, two; Ka‘u and North Kohala, one each.

So far this year, there have been 846 DUI arrests compared to 919 during the same period last year, a decrease of 7.9%.

There have been 700 major accidents so far this year compared to 684 during the same period last year, an increase of 2.3%.

To date, there have been 33 official traffic fatalities, compared to 22 fatalities for the same time last year, an increase of 50%.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
