The Kamehameha Schools Hawaii girls volleyball team finished an undefeated season with a final win over Hilo to claim the Divison I BIIF Championship on Tuesday.
KS-Hawaii swept Hilo with scores of 25-20, 25-10, 25-11 to win their third straight league title and the BIIF’s No. 1 seed to the state tournament, which will be held next week.
A balanced offense aided the Warriors in their victory as outside hitters Sarah Schubert and Maela Honma knocked down eight and six kills, respectively. Middle attackers Kilinoelehua Helm and Taina Kaauwai added to offensive strength with six kills each.
The four players were efficient in hitting percentages with Honma hitting .333, Helm hitting .500, Kaauwai hitting .625 and Schubert hitting .545.
Leisey Keli‘i answered the Viking’s offense with 17 digs out of 46, accounting for 37% of the team’s dig total.
“Defensively, having 46 digs in a three-set match is huge,” said head coach Sam Thomas. “Leisey Keli‘i is definitely one of the top liberos in the state of Hawaii, and her large percentage of digs is evidence of that.”
The Warriors will return to the court for the first round of matches in the Division I State Championships from Monday, Oct. 24 to Friday, Oct. 28 at the SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center on Oahu.
