A 21-year-old Kailua-Kona man died following a two-vehicle collision on Wednesday evening near the intersection of Kealakaa and Kealakehe streets in North Kona.
The victim has been positively identified as Kalai Alohanamakana Lincoln.
Officers responding to a 6:54 p.m. call determined that a northbound blue 2000 Toyota 4Runner heading north on Kealakaa Street was making a left turn onto Kealakehe Street when it was struck by Lincoln, who was riding a southound red Honda Grom “pocket-sized” motorcycle without his headlights on.
Lincoln was taken to Kona Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 7:35 p.m.
Lincoln was wearing a helmet, but police think speed was a factor in the collision.
The driver of the 4Runner, a 43-Kailua-Kona man, wasn’t injured.
A coroner’s inquest has been opened and an autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.
Lincoln’s death is the 28th official traffic fatality this year compared to 18 at this time last year.
