Hawaii County Civil Defense has reported that a magnitude-4.5 earthquake poses no tsunami threat to the island.
The earthquake occurred at 12:43 p.m. and originated 6 miles northeast of Pahala from a point 20 miles below sea level. The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reports that the earthquake was part of an ongoing seismic swarm under Pahala, which began in 2019.
Of the five most recent earthquakes to reach magnitude-4 or greater in Hawaii, four were also part of the same swarm under Pahala, and took place between July 26 and today.
HVO advises that aftershocks are possible in the next few days or weeks.
