The Volcano Art Center gallery in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is hosting an exhibition of new works depicting images of hula and Hawaiian aumakua by David Maes Gallegos.

The show continues from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily through Sept. 18.

A reception for the artist will be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 27. Admission is free, but park entrance fees apply.

Gallegos was born in Denver, Colorado, in 1954 and is of Arapaho and Cheyenne ancestry. At a young age, Gallegos and his family moved to San Francisco. At age 14 he received his first art award, First Place in Graphic Arts at the California State Fair.

Subsequent awards and scholarships in painting and drawing were acquired while he completed a bachelor’s degree in fine arts degree with high distinction from California College of Arts and Crafts in 1974.

In 1977, Gallegos received his master’s degree in fine arts from the University of California, San Francisco.

He had his first one-man show in San Francisco in 1978. From 1978 to 1990, he exhibited in numerous one-person and group exhibitions in California and worked with Tamarind lithographer Ernest DeSoto.

In 1990, Gallegos was discovered by Zephyr Cove Publishing in Japan. He signed to a five-year contract from 1990 to 1995, and again from 2000 to 2003. The artist traveled to Japan annually for exhibitions of his artwork.

Gallegos has displayed his art and won awards in numerous one person and group shows nationally and internationally.

His art also hangs in several private and corporate collections.
