During the week of June 27-July 3, Hawaii Island police arrested 17 motorists for DUI. Four of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. Two were younger than 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: South Hilo, six; Puna, four; Kona, three; and North Kohala and South Kohala, two each.
So far this year, there have been 528 DUI arrests compared to 593 during the same period last year, a decrease of 11%.
There have been 389 major accidents so far this year compared to 394 during the same period last year, a decrease of 1.3%.
To date, there have been 21 official traffic fatalities, compared to 12 fatalities at the same time last year, an increase of 75%.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
