John Herbert Honl, 92, of Kailua-Kona died May 15 at Kona Community Hospital. Born on Kauai, he was owner and skipper of Kakina sport fishing boat, Waikiki beach boy, outdoorsman, fisherman, diver, hunter, antique collector, Punahou School alumnus, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary veteran, member of the Outrigger Canoe Club,Hawaii Big Game Fishing Club, Historical Bottle Collectors Club and Big Island Volkswagen Club. Private scattering of ashes at a later date. Survived by son, Rex John (LoriAnn) Honl; stepchildren, Graham Salisbury of Oregon, Ann Thomas of San Francisco, Patricia Godfrey of Hawaii and Carol Salisbury of Washington; hanai brother, Tioni (Gail) Judd of Waimea; a granddaughter, a hanai grandson and five great-grandchildren; a niece. Mike Hideo Odachi, 74, of Volcano died May 21 at Hawaii Care Choices Pohai Malama Care Center. Born in Honolulu, he was a retired public elementary school educator. Celebration of life 11 a.m. Saturday, June 25, at Moon Garden Farms in Mountain View. Visitation 10-11 a.m. July 15 at Mililani Mortuary Honolulu Downtown Chapel. Service at 11 a.m. No flowers. Anthony Paul Sampaia, 59, of Pepeekeo, formerly of Las Vegas, died May 23 at Hilo Medical Center. Both in Hilo, he was a retired self-employed handyman, U.S. Army National Guard veteran and traveled extensively throughout Asia. Visitation 9-10:30 a.m. Monday (June 13) at Dodo Mortuary Chapel. Funeral services at 10:30 a.m. Casual attire. Burial at Mauna Kea Memorial Park in Papaikou. Leonard Kim Fan Shim Sr., 92, of North Kohala died May 10 at home. Born in Makapala, North Kohala, he was a fuel distribution systems worker at Bradshaw Army Airfield, U.S. Army National Guard retiree, worked at the former Kohala Sugar Co., Hawi Sacred Heart Church choir director, Lions Club president and community steward. Brief vigil visitation 3-8 p.m. Friday, June 17, at the Shim residence; 53-4152 Akoni Pule Hwy., Hala‘ula, North Kohala. Visitation again 8:45-10 a.m. Saturday, June 18, at Sacred Heart Church in Hawi. Service at 10 a.m. Burial to follow at the church cemetery. Survived by sons, Leonard Shim Jr. and Kenneth of Kohala; daughters, Barbara (Glenn) Kossow of Kailua-Kona, Bette (John) Brumlow and Laure (Joey) Gomera of Kohala; brother, Roland Shim of Kaneohe, Oahu; sister, Florence Heu of Kaneohe; seven grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild; cousins, nieces and nephews.
