The Volcano Art Center is proud to announce a juried art exhibit celebrating 150 years of Hawaii honoring King Kamehameha The Great. The mixed media exhibition is now on display daily from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. through June 26 at the Volcano Art Center Gallery in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

On June 11, 1872, Hawaii held its first King Kamehameha Day celebration.

The holiday was decreed by royal proclamation in 1871 by King Kamehameha V, grandson of Kamehameha I.

The day is intended to celebrate the legacy of not only his grandfather but the father of the Hawaiian nation. This year, June 11 marks the 150th anniversary of this holiday.

Twenty-one works of art were selected for this exhibition by jurors Desiree Moana Cruz and Nicole Nione from nearly 40 submissions.

Cruz is the Hawaii Island commissioner for the King Kamehameha Celebration and a former board member of the Volcano Art Center. She has traveled the world extensively as a hula dancer and as a former Miss Hawaii.

Naone is immersed within Hawaii’s creative community. As founder and Creative Director of PointHawaii.com, Naone brings her esteemed marketing knowledge and experiences to assist small businesses. She also serves on the Board of Directors for the Domestic Violence Action Center, as well as being the official media sponsor of both the Hawai‘i International Film Festival and the ‘Ohina Short Film Showcase.

VAC will be celebrating the art and artists of this exhibition on Saturday, June 11, with a lei hulu demonstration by Momi (Gyongyi) Szirom and Robert Beebe from 11 a.m. -1 p.m. and a reception for the artists tentatively scheduled from 2 – 4 p.m.
