The First Annual Heluhelu Quiz Bowl, an updated quiz bowl based upon the earlier Newbery Quiz Bowl, was held on April 7 at the Mauna Lani Resort. Nine teams of fourth through seventh graders, from across the island, participated in a fast paced question competition based on 30 books they had read during the school year.

The books were selected from Newbery Award winners, Nene Award Winners, and other recommended young adult books.

Teams competing this year represented Big Island Public Schools, a homeschool group, and a regional Public Library. Tae Keller, author of the 2021 Newbery Medal award-winner ‘When You Trap a Tiger,’ was the Quiz Master. Keller autographed her book for each participating student. Each participant also received a gift card.

The winners were: Hilo Public Library, first place; The Terrible Five, second place and Kamehameha Middle, third place.
