COVID cases continue to rise, more than 5,700 statewide last week

More than 5,000 new COVID-19 cases were reported in Hawaii over the last week, rising by more than 1,000 from the previous week.

According to Department of Health data, 5,768 new cases were reported statewide between May 4 and today, 718 of which were on the Big Island. By comparison, 4,249 were reported in the previous week, with 491 on the Big Island.

Six COVID-related deaths have been reported in the last week, bringing the statewide death toll to 1,434.

According to the Department of Education, six schools on the Big Island have reported more than 10 COVID cases in the last week. Keaau Middle School reported 17 new cases between May 1 and May 10, with Waiakea Intermediate School reporting 16, Keaau High reporting 15, Waiakeawaena Elementary reporting 14, Waiakea High reporting 13, and Honokaa High and Intermediate reporting 13.
