Hawaii County firefighters were awarded for their professionalism, compassion, teamwork, and heroic efforts demonstrated during challenging and strenuous calls for service that resulted in lives being saved.

The Daniel Robert Sayre Memorial Foundation honors exceptional personnel for service beyond the call of duty every year.

While the normal ceremony was postponed due to COVID-19, Frank and Laura Mallery-Sayre put together the event to award firefighters from 2021.

Those awarded with the Daniel Robert Sayre award, a county award and state award, include: Fire Rescue Specialist Ryan Kihara, Chopper I Pilot Paul Darryl, Fire Rescue Specialist Chad Chun Fat, Captian James “Kimo” Wilson and Fire Equipment Operator Michael Akau.

Honorable mentions include: Fire Medical Specialist II Max Alcover, Fire Fighter and Emergency Medical Technician Paris Kippen, Fire Fighter and Emergency Medical Technician Bronson Kobayashi, Fire Fighter and Emergency Medical Technician Chad Wissing and Fire Fighter and Emergency Medical Technician Jose “Mokahi” Vera Cruz.
