Lyman Museum accreditation reaffirmed by the American Alliance of Museums

The Lyman Museum’s accreditation has again been reaffirmed by the American Alliance of Museums, the highest national recognition afforded the nation’s museums. Accreditation signifies excellence to the museum community, to governments, funders, outside agencies, and to the museum-going public. The Lyman Museum was initially accredited in 1976, and it is one of only 25 museums to be continuously accredited since then. All museums must undergo an accreditation review at least every 10 years to maintain accredited status.

Lyman Museum President and Executive Director Dr. Barbara Moir spoke about the many months of hard work and dedication by museum staff and trustees that led to the commission’s decision.

“The fact that our lengthy and comprehensive self-study work was undertaken at the same time as we prepared to complete and open our new Island Heritage Gallery, under pandemic challenges and restrictions, makes the final outcome all the more remarkable an accomplishment. Being an accredited institution not only means you maintain the highest standards of your profession, it makes you eligible to apply for and receive federal grants to make improvements to your public services, facilities, and operations.”

The Lyman Museum’s new Island Heritage Gallery, Earth Heritage Gallery, and Mission House are open to the public 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday. Visitors are encouraged to purchase timed admission tickets by advance reservation, either on the website (www.lymanmuseum.org) or by telephone (808-935-5021).
