UHH golf/tennis: Uchida fires 72 for Vulcans women

UH-Hilo golfer Kaelyn Uchida fired a par 72 to tie for second place after the first round of the West Texas A&M Desert Invite on Monday at Arizona.

The Vulcan junior and 2018 Waiakea graduate is three strokes behind Academy of Art’s Anahi Servin, who shot a 69.

UHH is carded a 31 over 319 total to land in 11th place in the 18-team field. Colorado Christian Leads with a 14 over.

UHH’s next highest finisher was Tori Hironaga, 8 over, tied for 42nd; followed by Kailey Oki, 11 over, tied for 60th; Tia Kualii, 12 over, tied for 68th; and Carli Shimokawa, 14 over, tied for 82nd.

Tennis

Sophomore Alessio Demichelis was named the PacWest player of the week after a 4-6, 7-6 (9-7), 7-5 win over Hawaii Pacific’s Robin Sanz on Saturday at the Vulcan courts.

The Vulcans stunned the No. 4 Sharks 4-2 on Saturday for their sixth straight win and improved to 7-8.

In singles, UHH’s Martin Soukal defeated Jan Pleva, 6-1, 6-3; Demichelis def. Sanz; HPU’s Jakub Beran def. Luca Checchia, 6-4, 6-4; UHH’s Luca Matheiowetz def. Ben Loccisano, 6-4, 6-2; UHH’s Joshua Liu def. Jan Heine, 6-3, 6-3; UHH’s Luka Petrikic def. Ethan Sherwood, 3-6, 7-6 (9-7), 2-3.

In doubles, HPU’s Pleva/Jordi Walder def. Luke Hamano/Soukal, 6-4; HPU’s Beran/Sanz def. Liu/Checchia, 6-2; UHH’s Matheiowetz/Demichelis def. Heine/Loccisano, 5-3.

The UHH’s women’s match against HPU on Sunday was canceled due to weather. The UHH women next play Cal Lutheran at the UHH tennis courts Friday, April 15.
