The Big Island Press Club announces the availability of scholarships of up to $1,500 for students pursuing higher education in journalism and related careers.

Last year, BIPC awarded a total of $4,000 to four Hawaii Island students at a Zoom event honoring the scholarship recipients.

Application deadline is April 30. To qualify applicants must: have Big Island residential ties, demonstrate an interest in journalism or related career, be enrolled as a full-time college student or a high school student accepted for college, and show a record of academic achievement.

In the past, BIPC has offered scholarships honoring past Big Island journalists and advocates. The awards include the Robert C. Miller Memorial Scholarship, the Bill Arballo Memorial Scholarship, the Marcia Reynolds Memorial Scholarship, the Yukino Fukubori Memorial Scholarship, the Jack Markey Memorial Scholarship and the Hugh Clark Memorial Scholarship.

Past Big Island Press Club scholarship winners include: Lara Sonoda, assistant vice president and commercial banking officer for First Hawaiian Bank and freelance writer; Ilihia Gionson, public affairs officer for the Hawaii Tourism Authority and former aide to the late Mayor Billy Kenoi; Peter Sur, former Hawaii Tribune-Herald reporter now employed by the county’s Department of Environmental Management; Alyson Kakugawa-Leong, director of media relations at the University of Hawaii at Hilo; John Burnett, Hawaii Tribune-Herald reporter and former radio news reporter; and Mitchell Byars, reporter for the Boulder Daily Camera newspaper in Colorado.

Announcement of winners will be at a BIPC event online, date and time to be announced.
