Police arrest 22 for DUI

During the week of March 7-13, Hawaii Island police arrested 22 motorists for DUI. Four of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. One was younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Puna and South Hilo, six each; Kona five; South Kohala, four; and North Kohala, one.

So far this year, there have been 235 DUI arrests compared to 251 during the same period last year, a decrease of 6.4%.

There have been 147 major accidents so far this year compared to 151 during the same period last year, a decrease of 2.6%.

To date, there have been nine traffic fatalities compared to five fatalities for the same time last year, an increase of 80%.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
