Military units are scheduled to conduct essential training activities at Pohakuloa Training Area this month that may be heard by surrounding communities.

Essential training is subject to change based on safety, weather and other environmental factors, according to an advisory from PTA.

Weather, such as overcast conditions can increase noise and vibrations. Should individuals hear noise, there is no immediate danger, the advisory stated.

The planned training is as follows:

• March 1-18, Army and Marine small arms training;

• March 1-18, Army and Marine artillery training;

• March 1-25, Unmanned aerial systems (UAS, or drones) training.

The following military convoys are planned:

• March 5, 8-9 a.m., Keaukaha Military Reservation (Hilo) to PTA;

• March 6, 10 a.m.-noon, PTA to Keaukaha Military Reservation (Hilo);

• March 7, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., PTA to Keaukaha Military Reservation (Hilo).

There are no hunting opportunities currently planned for March, according to PTA.

UAS/drone training can occur 24 hours a day, seven days a week on PTA in the restricted airspace.

“The military appreciates the understanding and continued support of the Hawaii Island community,” according to the advisory. “While sometimes loud, this training is critical to ensure military units and service members are ready to accomplish their mission and return home safely.”

To report concerns related to noise or training, contact U.S. Army Hawaii’s Community Concern Line at (808) 656-3487 or usarmy.hawaii.comrel@mail.mil.
