UHH women beat up on Holy Names again

The UH-Hilo women’s basketball team beat winless Holy Names 71-46 on Wednesday night at Oakland to stretch its winning streak to two straight.

The Vulcans also crushed the Hawks 78-47 on Tuesday night when Heaven Samayoa-Mathis (15 points), Mandi Kawaha (12), Nikki Miller (12), and Bree Olson (10) all scored in double figures.

A day later, Sara Shimizu came off the bench for 17 points on 5 of 6 shooting from 3-point range for the Vulcans (11-8, 8-7 PacWest), who are sixth in the standings.

Jasmine Soto scored 22 points for the Hawks (0-20, 0-12), who shot 43%, including 9 of 23 from long range.

UHH plays Fresno Pacific (7-11, 4-9) on Friday.

On Tuesday, the UHH men fell to Holy Names 86-77, behind Edward Gray’s 25 points on 7 of 12 shooting.

The Hawks (6-17, 4-11) shot 42%, including 6 of 25 from long distance.

Aniwaniwa Tait-Jones scored 23 points on 9 of 17 shooting, Donald McHenry added 18 points, and Max Kunnert had 15 points for the Vulcans (12-11, 8-8), who are sixth in the PacWest.

UHH plays Fresno Pacific (16-7, 10-6) on Friday in Fresno, Calif. It opened the trip with an 81-48 loss to Academy of Art.
