Only 74 new COVID cases were reported today in Hawaii County, the first double-digit number in more than a month.

According to the state Department of Health, 1,177 new cases were reported statewide, bringing the state cumulative total to 221,533. However, 775 of those cases were on Oahu, and another 179 on Maui, leaving the Big Island with relatively few cases.

The last time Hawaii County had fewer than 100 new cases in a single day was Dec. 29, when 26 cases were reported. Daily case totals have been steadily declining both on the Big Island and statewide as the omicron spike decreases in intensity.

On the other hand, 10 new deaths were reported statewide today, bringing the cumulative Hawaii death toll to 1,191. None of those deaths were on the Big Island.
